🐾 LEARN TO MEASURE YOUR PET ACCURATELY

Simple Measuring Guide for Pet Garment Prototyping
To begin making a basic pet garment pattern, you only need three key measurements:
- Neck circumference
- Chest circumference
- Back length
Before measuring, make sure the pet is calm and in a relaxed posture. Use treats or toys to help keep the pet still if needed.
Use a metric soft tape measure, and always measure over the natural coat (do not flatten unless necessary). All measurements are taken as net body sizes, without added ease.
1. Neck Circumference
📍 Where to measure:
Around the neck, just below the base of the skull and behind the ears.
📏 How to measure:
Wrap the tape snugly around the neck at this point. Keep it close to the skin but not tight — you should be able to slide two fingers under the tape.
2. Chest Circumference
📍 Where to measure:
Around the widest part of the chest, usually just behind the front legs.
📏 How to measure:
Wrap the tape horizontally around the chest. Make sure it’s level and not pressing into the body. Again, allow space for two fingers underneath.
3. Back Length
📍 Where to measure:
From the base of the neck (where the collar sits) down the spine to the base of the tail.
📏 How to measure:
Follow the natural curve of the back with the tape. After taking the measurement, reduce the value by 0.5–1 cm, depending on the breed and tail mobility.
📌 This adjustment ensures the garment does not press on the tail and allows freedom of movement.
✅ Do this now during measuring — no need to wait until pattern-making.
✅ Summary of Measurements:
Measurement | Method | Notes |
---|---|---|
Neck Circumference | Around the neck, below the skull | Two fingers under the tape |
Chest Circumference | Around the widest part of the chest | Behind front legs, tape level |
Back Length | From base of neck to base of tail | Subtract 0.5–1 cm after measurement |
